ActivityTracker is keeping track of steps taken by running an energy-efficient service in the background. However some Android devices will close this service in order to "save battery life" which will cause ActivityTracker to lose steps. In order to prevent that you need to give ActivityTracker enough permissions so that your device does not stop the service.
On Android 10 and newer ActivityTracker needs the "Physical activity" permission:

In the device Settings go to:
In the device Settings go to: Battery & power saving > Battery saver > Click "Restrict apps in background" > Find ActivityTracker > Set it to "No Restrictions"

Older devices: Battery > Click the three dots on the upper right corner > Battery Optimization > Click the drop-down arrow and choose “All apps” > Find ActivityTracker -> Choose "Don't Optimize"

In the device Settings go to: Battery > Power saving mode > Battery optimization > Choose "ActivityTracker" > Don't optimize > Save
